The Curve That Cure

In a flight to Bali, a tourist who has visited Bali many times was asked the reason why he likes to visit the island of Bali. Spontaneously this gentleman replied: "the most touching thing about Bali is the smile of the people".

In other words, smile is not a simple issue. Smile means much deeper than curving lips. Any heart who often smile understand, initially smile was just a greeting to the people to show that we are friends.

As one grow deeper, smile turns itself into a light of self acceptance. Especially because smile is a form of beautiful hug to the soul within. When you deeply smile, you deeply embrace the soul within.

Every spiritual friends who grow deep on the path of meditation, used to smile at each blessing of present moment - whether it is pleasant or unpleasant - one day he/she will understand, smile is a beautiful flower that we share with the world.

In short, smile is beautiful bridge that connecting a person to both the life outside and inside. In the West there is the story of Norman Cousins who has a very serious disease. Then he rented a small motel and spent a long time just watching funny movies which made him smile and get laugh.

To make the story short, some time later Norman Cousins  was cured from this complicated disease. The lesson to be drawn from here, and this is also confirmed by a number of research, laughter and smile boost one's immune system that can help the body to heal itself.

Being inspired by this story, it is worthy to train yourself to smile. Especially because in the deep spiritual journey, some of spiritual seekers like Rumi use smile as an important spiritual path.

Notice one of Rumi's poems: "life is like staying in motel. Each day guests keep changing. And whoever the guest is, never tired to smile". To put it simply, life is like a temporary stay. Sometimes we are visited by pain, other times we are visited by pleasure. And the task of spiritual seekers is simply smile.

The same thing happen to meditation. At the level of perfection, to practice meditation is to practice deep smile. When you can smile at pleasure, it means you are a commoner. When you can smile at pain, it means you are a master.

In a simple but deep language, when someone smile, they are not only sharing a light to others, but also bringing candle to the darkness that lies within. This is the curve that cure. It cures both the outer world and the inner world as well.
