Some spiritual friends whose souls grow old understand that when they were young, they were attracted by skin deep beauty. Eyes, lips, nose, favorite shirt color, style of speech are some of the outer things on the surface that makes immature souls attracted to each other like metal pulled by a magnet.
And once souls grow rich after being deceived here and there, being fooled from one place to another, by then someone begins to force themselves to look into a far deeper beauty behind the skin. As has appeared many times in the meditation sessions, some friends who find their spouse in the meditation session bring simple but profound lessons.
One who is garbage within (by which read: hatred, anger, revenge) is easily fooled by flies who dressed themselves like beautiful butterflies. People who are beautiful flowers within (full of love and kindness), with little effort will be visited by the true beautiful butterflies. The remaining lessons then, compared to wrapping the garbage then meeting the flies with the dress of butterflies, it is preferable to transform the garbage into a beautiful flower.
And the journey of transforming waste of imperfections is far from easy. One's soul can even enter the abyss. But for those friends whose determination is strong, they keep a lot of seeds of light inside, especially those who have a deep longing to share loving-kindness since childhood, the following steps are worth contemplating.
As experienced by many glowing souls, the opening door which is very crucial to find the most charming beauty, is suffering. Especially the kind of suffering that leaves no option to run away. In families, the most smooth sandpaper usually comes from children who need special care and attention.
If you do not match with the boss, you can move to another workplace. If a person does not match with the spouse, there is the option of divorce. But if you do not fit with the children, parents do not have the luxury of running away from problems. The only way left is to transform it into a spiritual journey.
From the last difficult experience usually the door of deep beauty begins to open. Sharing the story is easy, but going through it is very difficult. When it is written, the story is not too long, but the tunnels of suffering are very long and deep as well. The concrete challenges in this field can vary from one person to another. From children with special needs, children who get bullied in the school, to children who were dragged up by drugs.
To be honest, this is the deepest spiritual practice which had ever happened. Perhaps that is why, in ancient times many profound spiritual seekers tend to avoid having a family. Especially because the trials and challenges are very heavy. Not a few of seekers who collapsed in the past. But as the old saying in zen goes: "Small clay makes a small Buddha. Big clay makes a big Buddha". If the challenge is small then one can attain a small amount of enlightenment. When the shock is large, a person can attain a big amount of enlightenment.
That is also the reason why in Tantra the enlightened beings are called Mahasiddha. Someone who has passed unimaginable shocks and trials, then meets the light. The key is simple, always embrace every piece of pain and suffering that comes with a pair of hands of honesty and sincerity. In the language of psychology, train yourself to be at ease with the not knowing.
Anyone who can get through these dark nights for years, one day they will have a direct experience (not understanding through words), anything that's called as false-true, bad-good, dirty-holy, sad-glad, sorrow-joy is turned out to be a pair of lips of God which is here to share a beautiful smile. Joy is a kind of music. Grief is the way the soul understands the meaning of the lyrics. Happiness is a kind of smile. Sadness is a sign that the soul is digging deeper.
After passing through "the dark nights of the soul for years", a friend in the West attained enlightenment. But after that he did not become a famous spiritual Master. He chose to be a taxi driver in the crowds of New York. When he was asked why, he replied: "I want to see God's smile every day". It means, he wants to listen to the sadness and the happiness of people every day in the taxi. From the mother who was expelled by her own son, until teenagers who are falling in love. This is the most touching beauty. It resembles white birds in the snow. Someone beautify in the society. But very few people recognize that they are beautifying the society.
