One of the
important homework of human beings which has not been completed since a long
time ago is how to heal the burning anger. As we all know, religious norms have
been created for thousands of years to prohibit anger, the institution of
prison has been established to avoid anger for thousands of years as well, the
old discipline of psychology also wants to heal anger, but there are no signs
that anger is declining. In some parts, people's anger is even worse.
Eventhough it
appears to be difficult and complicated to heal the burning anger, but it is
worth trying again and again. In the perspective of eastern philosophy, when
anger is compared with a government, the president is called avidya
(ignorance), the coordinating ministers are called complexity and hatred.
Together they make the world darker and darker day by day.
What is meant
by ignorance in this case, it is not ignorance because of not having a diploma.
It is not ignorance because one never reads. But ignorance that comes from the
mind which is unclean and unclear. In this day and age, one of the great powers
that lie behind the unclean and unclear mind is the endless desire.
One who walks
wants to have a motorcycle. After having motorcycle, they want to have a car.
After driving a Toyota, they want to have BMW. That's how the endless desire
turns life into the unlimited sea of grief. The immediate consequence of all
of this, life grows from one complexity into another complexity. The condition
is worsened by the old habit of comparing upward. It is this dangerous
combination of complexity and hatred that continually burns the flames of anger
inside.
But do not be
afraid, in nature there are always counter-balances. The balancing power of
fire is water. The balancing power of waste is flowers. The balancing power of
a bad guy is a good guy. The same thing happens to anger. As long as one is
diligent and sincere, meditation in particular can help people to recover from
anger.
One of the
simple but profound symbols in this regard is organic gardeners. Everything
inside and outside are organic materials that can be processed. The materials
outside are looking at the person who causes anger as a suffering soul. Behind
their suffering there are complicated networks like troubled families and
problematic schools. Once this complicated network is opened, there is the
possibility that the flower of compassion blossoms.
The
ingredients that are available within is different. Firstly, whenever anger
visits your life, learn to be beautifully connect to the anchor that is
connecting the ship of mind with the beach of peace. The anchor is named
breath. Secondly, accept anger as part of yourself. Thirdly, embrace anger like
a mother embracing her only son.
As ever
written by many sacred books, there are many secrets hidden behind the breath.
In the context of anger, the breath brings fresh air into the inner room of the
person who is on fire. It makes the room of the mind fresh. Especially if the
breath is combined with the realization that anger is not our enemy, but anger
is part of us.
In psychology
there is an old phrase that said: "What you resist persists". What
you fight will fight you back with greater power. When a person has a headache,
there is no doctor who advises to dispose of the head. All doctors advise to
take good care of the head. The same thing happens to anger. Forget the idea of
getting rid of anger totally. Treat anger as a mother who takes good care of
her only son.
Anyone who is
diligent and sincere in practicing meditation like this for decades, there is
the possibility that complexity can be replaced by simplicity, there is
possibility that hatred is replaced by kindness. And the most important thing, ignorance (avidya) is illuminated by the
light of knowledge (vidya). Unlike the teachers in the school who illuminate
the students with the borrowed words from outside, this way of healing anger
will enable one to illuminate the darkness within by using the light inside.
The Balinese elders called it meshiva raga. Directly learning from the Light of
God within.
